Abstract
Die von Max Horkheimer und Theodor W. Adorno gemeinsam verfasste "Dialektik der Aufklärung" ist der wichtigste Text der Kritischen Theorie und zugleich eines der klassischen Werke der Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Philosophische Kritik, Auseinandersetzung mit dem Faschismus und die Resultate langjähriger empirischer Untersuchungen in den USA verschmelzen hier zu einer Theorie der modernen Massenkultur. "Aufklärung" als Herrschaft der Vernunft, als Unterwerfung der Natur und die menschlichen Zwecke wird über sich selbst aufgeklärt.

Darin u.a.: "In der Galileischen Mathematisierung der Natur wird nun diese selbst unter der Leitung der neuen Mathematik idealisiert, sie wird - modern ausgedrückt - selbst zu einer mathematischen Mannigfaltigkeit.« Denken verdinglicht sich zu einem selbsttätig ablaufenden, automatischen Prozeß, der Maschine nacheifernd, die er selber hervorbringt, damit sie ihn schließlich ersetzen kann."
