Abstract
Die ungeheure Ausweitung menschlicher Fähigkeiten und Handlungsspielräumemacht es für Jonas notwendig, den Rahmen ethischer Überlegungen weiter zu stecken, als dies bislang in der traditionellen Ethik der Fall gewesen ist. Da die Wirkungen des technisch potenzierten Handelns den ganzen Erdball betreffen und die Folgen des biomedizinischen Erkenntniszuwachses die jetzt lebenden Generationen weithin überdauern werden, muss an die Stelle einer Ethik der Nähe und der Gleichzeitigkeit eine Ethik der Ferne treten. Eine solche Ethik begründet die Forderung, so zu handeln, dass die Wirkungen unserer Handlungen verträglich sind mit der Permanenz echten menschlichen Lebens auf Erden. Das Prinzip Verantwortung mit seinem weiten zeitlichen Horizont tritt damit in Konkurrenz zum utopischen Denken, dem Prinzip Hoffnung (Ernst Bloch), das als einziges bislang das Konzept einer Zukunftsethik entworfen hat, in der die Idee des gesellschaftlich-technischen Fortschritts jedoch alles Gewesene und Gegenwärtige zu einem bloss peripheren Übergangsphänomen macht. Utopien werden fragwürdig, wo moderne Technologie es ermöglicht, aus den literarischen Spielen der Fantasie den Ernst realisierbarer Weltentwürfe zu machen. Jonas plädiert stattdessen für eine >>Heuristik der Furcht<<. Im Erschrecken vor den künftigen Gefahren, die den Menschen bedrohen, gewinnen wir erst ein wirkliches Verständnis unserer Selbst und dessen, was es zu schützen gilt. Dem Prinzip der Verantwortung eher als dem der Hoffnung zu folgen, bedeutet ferner, den Unheilsprognosen ein grösseres Gewicht als den Heilserwartungen beizumessen. In diesem Sinne ist Jonas' Denken konservativ, eher bewahrend als wagend. Es geht von der wesentlichen Annahme aus, dass das Gewordensein des Menschen durchaus zulänglich ist. Der Mensch harrt nicht erst einer radikalen Verbesserung und Vervollkommnung in einer neuen Gesellschaftsordnung, wie sie der Marxismus durch revolutionäre Praxis heraufzuführen beabsichtigt.
