Wie wird die Bibliothek der Zukunft aussehen? Welche Rolle spielen Information und Medien im Jahr 2015? Wo steht das deutsche Bibliothekswesen heute? Das sind nur einige der Fragestellungen, die eine neue Publikation über das deutsche Bibliothekswesen zu beantworten versucht, die von der Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Bibliotheksverbände e.V. anlässlich der 69. Generalkonferenz und Ratsversammlung der IFLA im August 2003 in Berlin mit finanzieller Unterstützung des Goethe-Instituts Inter Nationes herausgegeben wird. Die reich bebilderte Publikation erscheint sowohl in deutscher als auch in englischer Sprache. Alle Teilnehmer der IFLA 2003 Konferenz erhalten ein kostenloses Exemplar in deutsch oder englisch mit ihren Konferenzunterlagen. Inhalt: 1. Bibliotheksgeschichte 2. Bildung und Kultur 3. Visionen 2015 - Die Zukunft von Bibliothek und Information Daten, Fakten, Zahlen und Übersichten in Wort und in Bild - mit dieser farbigen und anschaulichen Publikation erfahren Sie das Wichtigste über Deutschlands Bibliotheken, über Ausbildung und Beruf, Vereine und Verbände, über Bibliotheks-, Kultur- und Bildungspolitik, auch über die politische Struktur der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der Mitte Europas mit ihren föderativen Prinzipien und deren Auswirkungen auf das Bibliothekswesen. Die Publikation beschreibt nicht nur die historische Entwicklung und die Bibliothekstypen im seit 1990 wiedervereinigten Deutschland, sie geht darüber hinaus auf wichtige verfassungs- und kulturpolitische Hintergründe ein und wagt ferner einen Blick in die Zukunft der Bibliotheken mit einer "Vision 2015". Insbesondere werden Initiativen und Aktivitäten deutscher Bibliotheken, bibliothekarischer Einrichtungen und Verbände im nationalen und internationalen Zusammenhang hervorgehoben. Aufgezeigt wird, wie seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs ein vielschichtiges, dezentral organisiertes und leistungsfähiges Bibliotheksnetz aufgebaut werden konnte, das sich dynamisch weiter entwickelt, um den Herausforderungen des digitalen Zeitalters gerecht zu werden.
