Abstract
Das Bedürfnis, mehr über den nächsten Urlaubsort zu erfahren, Informationen über ein bestimmtes Produkt zu erhalten oder sich Kenntnisse zum Begriff des Information Need anzueignen: All diese Situationen haben gemeinsam, dass ein Bedürfnis nach Information besteht, in der Informationsverhaltensforschung oftmals als Information Need bezeichnet. Für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaftler*innen ist die Untersuchung von Informationsbedürfnissen unter anderem im Rahmen der Nutzer*innenforschung ein Kernthema. Der Begriff des Information Need ist daher eines der meist diskutierten aber zugleich auch kontroversesten Konzepte der Forschung zum menschlichen Informationsverhalten. In diesem Beitrag sollen die terminologischen Debatten, historischen Hintergründe und Forschungsentwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit dem Konzept dargestellt werden. Der nachfolgende Abschnitt beschäftigt sich mit den Begriffen Bedürfnis und Information, bevor im Anschluss das Konzept der Information Needs sowie verwandte Ansätze im Detail vorgestellt werden. Es folgt eine kurze Auseinandersetzung mit den deutschsprachigen Begriffen Informationsbedarf und Informationsbedürfnis. Weiterhin werden Forschungstrends sowie methodische Ansätze zur Erforschung von Information Needs präsentiert. Der Beitrag schließt mit einer kritischen Reflexion und einem Ausblick auf mögliche Entwicklungen im Forschungsfeld.
