Abstract

Der Werdegang, das Überleben und die trügerischen Erfolge eines Bildungsenthusiasten vor dem Hintergrund einer Familiensaga und der Geschichte Nordrhein-Westfalens. Das Thema der diversen Stationen auf den Wanderungen des Protagonisten ist die "Bildungsrevolution", für die er fast immer zu früh kommt, bis er am Ende doch Anschluss an sie findet. So muss er als Kind in der extrem bildungsfeindlichen jungen Republik mit Lug und Trug um jede Druckzeile kämpfen - sei es ein Buch, seien es "Schundhefte" wie die Lore-Romane. Er wird Zeuge des Untergangs der ländlichen Kultur und des Niedergangs der proletarischen Arbeiterkultur rund um Kohle, Stahl und Brauereien. Das Ruhrgebiet stellt sich ihm als kafkaeske Dienstleistungsgesellschaft in den Formen der Versicherungswirtschaft und Stadtverwaltungen dar. Weiterbildung und nie gestillter Lesehunger führen ihn an die Ruhr-Universität Bochum, wo er zwei Leben führt, in der Studentenrevolte von 1968 und als Mainstream-Forscher. Er wird Zeuge, wie Wirtschaft und Politik die Erneuerung des Ruhrgebiets hintertreiben.Der Protagonist zieht eine Bilanz zu sieben Jahrzehnten Ruhrgebiet. Er fragt sich, wo der letzte Arbeiter geblieben ist und was die sich mittlerweile im Leerlauf befindende Bildungsrevolution gebracht hat. Die Welt ist nicht unbedingt besser geworden.
