Abstract

Examines developments in access to library systems. There are 2 main reasons for users making enquiries with a cataloguing system. The first is to locate an item when its details are known. The second is for thematic or topical searches and subject searching to find more appropriate terminology. Discusses the flaws in OPACs and how they may be improved through better fields with which to search and better interfaces. The use of thesauri, such as LCSH enhances access as do expert systems and artificial intelligence. Explains how hardware developments have enabled the database to be enriched. Outlines the use of MARC, tape standards and text retrieval systems based on signature file methods. Analyses the impact of contents pages and indexes to provide data with which users can search. Compares results of searches with the BOOKS and MARC databases. Discusses how contents and index data could be added to a system through scanning pages and ordering unstructured text with tools like ISYS, TOPIC or TITAN and by using Standard Generalized Markup Language, (SGML) ISO 8879. Elements from SGML are encoded in a Document Type Definition (DTD). Describes the advantages and future use of DTD and SGML
