Abstract

Bücher sind Informationsträger, mitunter enthalten sie außer dem gedruckten Text auch interessante Hinweise zu ihrem eigenen Lebensweg: von Hand zu Hand weitergereicht, verschenkt, verkauft, vermacht oder auch unrechtmäßig in neuen Besitz überführt. In unsicheren Zeiten auf holprigen Wegen über weite Strecken transportiert, wie die Bücherkisten, die 1801 Mainz erreichten. Sie enthielten verstaatlichtes Bibliotheksgut aus den aufgelösten Pariser Klosterbibliotheken. Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim, damals Bibliothécaire de l'Université de Mayence, der Vorgängereinrichtung der heutigen Wissenschaftlichen Stadtbibliothek Mainz, hatte die Erlaubnis erhalten, 2.000 Bände aus den staatlichen Depots in Paris zu entnehmen. Die Herkunft der Bücher dokumentierte er sorgfältig durch ein Etikett, das er in jeden Band einklebte. Die Lebensgeschichte eines Buches zu ergründen ist Aufgabe der Provenienzerschließung. Sie wird an den Spuren, also Exlibris, Wappen, handschriftlichen Notizen etc., die Vorbesitzer im Buch hinterlassen haben, in Ausschnitten und in gut dokumentierten Fällen sogar vollständig nachvollziehbar.
