Abstract: Wie kommt die Idee des Künstlers auf die Leinwand? Warum ist es so schwer, ein perfektes Werk zu schaffen, die wahre Liebe, das große Glück zu finden? Warum bleiben Werke unvollendet und werden gerade so zu Meilensteinen der Kultur? Neurobiologisch erforscht ist, wie Nervenzellen Sinneseindrücke verarbeiten, wie Botenstoffe im Gehirn Verliebtsein und Lust steruern. Wie aber funktioniert das Gehirn, wenn es um Ideen und Ideale, die Liebe, die Schönheit schlechthin geht? Hier kann die Neurobiologie von den Schönen Künsten und dem kreativen Schaffen lernen, behauptet Semir Zeki. Mit Werken von Michelangelo, Cézanne, Balzac, Thomas Mann, Richard Wagner u.a. führt er uns zu einem tieferen Verständnis, wie unser Gehirn die Welt erfasst.

Genau das will der Londoner Hirnforscher Semir Zeki mit seinem Buch "Glanz und Elend des Gehirns - Neurobiolo- gie im Spiegel von Kunst, Musik und Literatur" ändern. Wie wir Sinneswahrnehmungen - was wir sehen, riechen, hören - verarbeiten, ist neurobiologisch erforscht. Unser Hirn erstellt Konzepte. Sehen wir beispielsweise das Blatt eines Baums, sagt uns unser Gehirn immer, dass es grün ist, auch wenn es in der Abendsonne eigentlich rot erscheinen müsste. Das Hirn hat also das Konzept abgespeichert, dass Blätter grün sind. Doch unser Gehirn kann natürlich noch viel mehr als nur Sinneseindrücke wahrnehmen: Es kann beurteilen, werten, erinnern, erwarten, deuten, mitfühlen. Aber wie leistet es solche Dinge, warum finden wir ein Kunstwerk schön oder fühlen mit einer Romanfigur mit? Zeki zeigt anhand von Kunstwerken, dass unser Hirn bei Musik, Literatur und der Liebe ähnliche Konzepte wie bei der Wahrnehmung von Sinneseindrücken nutzt. Als ein Beispiel dient ihm Michelangelos Kuppel des Petersdoms. Laut eigener Aussage entwarf der Künstler die Kuppel "oh- ne Berechnung, nur mit den Gefühlen, die einen großen Künstler leiten". Für Zeki steht fest: "Bei diesem 'Gefühl' handelt es sich natürlich um nichts anderes als das Konzept in seinem Gehirn." Zwar erläutert Zeki, dass Michelangelo vom "Göttlichen im Geiste" gesprochen habe und es sich dabei um ein Konzept handele. Doch wie dies entstanden sein könnte, erfährt der Leser nicht. Das macht der Autor erst am Beispiel des Malers Paul Cezanne klar. Cezanne sei überzeugt gewe- sen, dass das Sehen ein aktiver Prozess und die Details in einem Bild daher nicht wichtig seien. Aus dieser Annahme entwickelte sein Hirn demnach das Konzept der abstrakten Malerei. Seine Bilder seien immer weniger detailliert geworden, hätten sich also dem Hirnkonzept angenähert."
