Abstract
Für die Beantwortung dieser Frage muss man sich zunächst mit zwei Aspekten beschäftigen: Dem Katalog als Rechercheinstrument für Literatur und dem Nutzer. Was so einfach klingt, erweist sich in der Praxis als recht schwierig. Fangen wir beim Nutzer an. Dass es den Nutzer als solchen nicht geben kann, ist intuitiv zu erfassen und wird jedem schnell klar, der öfter Literatur recherchiert hat. Denn bereits im Laufe der Recherchen können sich bei ein und demselben Nutzer Informationsbedürfnisse ändern. Um wie viel größer müssen dann erst Unterschiede zwischen Individuen mit unterschiedlichen Erfahrungshorizonten sein. Damit sind wir an einem dritten Punkt angelangt, den es genauer zu betrachten gilt: das Informationsbedürfnis. Recherchesysteme müssen Nutzern helfen, das individuelle, situative und kontextabhängige Informationsbedürfnis' zu befriedigen. Hier liegt somit die Messlatte für das jeweilige Rechechesystem.
