Abstract
Die Universitätsbibliotheken des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen bewahren zusammen einen kostbaren und einzigartigen Bestand an handschriftlichen Materialien, Inkunabeln, alten Drucken, seltener regionenbezogener Literatur und sonstigen außergewöhnlichen Sammlungen, der - zusammen mit den entsprechenden Beständen weiterer Bibliotheken unterschiedlicher Trägerschaft - das in schriftlicher Form überlieferte kulturelle Erbe des Landes NRW repräsentiert. Diese Dokumente sollen ganz unabhängig von der ebenfalls erforderlichen Originalerhaltung sukzessive in die digitale Form überführt werden. Zusätzlich digitalisieren alle Hochschulbibliotheken moderne Druckwerke in den vom Urheberrecht gesetzten Grenzen im Sinne ihres primären Auftrags, Forschung und Lehre ihrer Hochschule zu unterstützen (Lehrbücher, Digitalisierung on demand). Alle Digitalisate sollen einfach, komfortabel und einheitlich erschlossen und präsentiert werden. Durch den Einsatz entsprechender Technologien und die Umsetzung etablierter Standards ist zudem dafür Sorge zu tragen, dass diese digitalen Quellen nachhaltig verfügbar und persistent adressierbar sind.
