Abstract
Zu Recht ist das Buch ein kulturelles Leitmedium. Die Pointe des geschriebenen Wortes liegt darin, daß es vom Menschen les- und verstehbar ist. Ganz anders die digitalen Medien: Der Preis, der für die Zeichenreduktion auf Null und Eins zu zahlen ist, liegt darin, daß der Mensch selber nichts mehr versteht. Erst eine technische Zwischenschicht, die zwischen ihn und das Medium geschoben wird, sorgt dafür, daß die Zeichen überhaupt erkannt und dekodiert werden können. Das heißt also: Wir haben uns selbst mit einem digitalen Totalmedium konfrontiert, das seine Totalität dadurch erreicht, daß es den Sprachbezug der Zeichen aufkündigt. Diese Tatsache ist nur einer der Befunde in einem großen Mediendesaster, das der Konstanzer Wissenschaftler Uwe Jochum skizziert. Das Tückischste an den Bildschirmmedien ist demnach, daß sie einigermaßen gut funktionieren, bis der Mensch eines Tages nur noch in die erloschene Röhre blickt.
