Abstract

Taking Seymour Sargent's discussion of Jurgen Habermas's communication theory and Ken Shearer's concept of the "gatekeeper" as a starting point, this article sketches the organization of collection development within the research university community. The collection development criteria which guide selection and the related responsibilities of selectors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are also briefly outlined.
