Abstract

Discusses the current state of the WWW as a useful tool for researchers in relation to the virtual library. Products such as IAC, EBSCO and UMI offer access using a client-server model and Internet data communications to remote full text databases of sufficient size and sscope to be useful to serious researchers. Reviews the client software for Windows to ProQuest Direct from UMI. UMI has a content base of over 17.000 periodicals, 7.000 newspapers, and 1,4 million dissertations. On 17 Oct 96 UMI introduced access to its servers through the WWW, and an update to its ProQuest Direct Windows client. Remote access includes Z39.50 and LYNX browsers. Covers operating environment; user interface; searching; retrieving documents; and documentation and help
