Abstract

Assesses the results of a lack of agreed and applicable standards for evaluating archive materials. The results of a survey of appraisal practices in municipal archives in the Rhineland drew attention to serious problems. These include additional prblems such as mistakes in records management, faulty use of filing systems, and irretrievable losses caused by unauthorized destruction of files. Argues that the answers to these problems lie in empoying professional archivists, the provision of continuous professional training and effective interchange of information among archivists
