Abstract: Unter "Wirtschaftsinformation" versteht man einerseits Informationen über das Wirtschaftsgeschehen, andererseits auch Informationenfür die "Wirtschaft". Während sich Privatleute, staatliche Institutionen und entsprechende Berufsgruppen (z.B. Journalisten, Wirtschaftsforscher) in der Regel mit dem wirtschaftlichen Geschehen allgemein befassen, bedeutet Wirtschaftsinformation für Unternehmen in erster Linie "Geschäftsinformation", Informationen also, die bei der zielorientierten Unternehmensführung, bei der Planung und Steuerung operativer Abläufe und bei der Beurteilung der Märkte und Marktchancen unterstützen. Der im angelsächsischen Sprachbereich gebräuchliche Begriff "Business Information" macht diesen Sachverhalt auch besser deutlich als der wenig spezifische deutsche Begriff "Wirtschaftsinformation". Nachfolgend wird Wirtschaftsinformation unter der Sicht der Unternehmensinformation betrachtet. Der Bedarf eines Unternehmens an Wirtschaftsinformation resultiert aus seinen Geschäfts- und Aufgabenfeldern, aus seiner Marktstrategie und aus den das Unternehmensumfeld beeinflussenden Faktoren politisch-gesetzlicher, ökonomischer, technologischer und sozio-kultureller Art. Wirtschaftsinformationen bieten die Grundlage für wirtschaftliches Handeln und Entscheiden. Sie sollen die Erkenntnis der wahrscheinlichen Entwicklung eines Sachverhaltes ermöglichen bzw die Auswirkungen bestimmter Entscheidungen oder Handlungen prognostizieren helfen. Die rechtzeitige Identifikation und Erschliessung von Marktpotentialen spielt eine wesentliche Rolle für die Sicherung von Wettbewerbsvorteilen und für die Festigung strategischer Marktpositionen. Neue Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien machen Produkte und Leistungen auf dem Markt transparenter und vergleichbarer. In einem wettbewerbsintensiven Markt wird der Zugang zur richtigen Information zur richtigen Zeit um so bedeutender, je mehr Marktteilnehmer potentiell über die gleichen Informationen verfügen. Das Wissen über Absatzmärkte, Marktanteile, Wettbewerber, Kundensegmente und Kundenanforderungen ist ein entscheidender Wettbewerbsfaktor. Der schnelle und umfassende Zugriff auf benötigte Informationen ist in Unternehmen eine maßgebliche Voraussetzung für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit. Neben den im operativen Geschäft und bei den betrieblichen Unterstützungsfunktionen anfallenden Daten sind es die öffentlich zugänglichen Informationen des externen Informationsmarktes, die einen wesentlichen Teil des Informationsbedarfs ausmachen.
