Abstract

Die Informationslandschaft hat sich in den letzten Jahren stark verändert. Zu den kommerziellen Fachinformationsdatenbanken sind zahlreiche frei verfügbare Literatur-Datenbanken gekommen, Volltext-Datenbanken, Pre-Print Server und Bilddatenbanken, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen. Leistungsstarke Suchmaschinen bieten die Möglichkeit, unstrukturierte Informationen im WWW ausfindig zu machen. Über das Internet sind aber ebenfalls eine ganze Reihe strukturierter und qualitativ hochwertiger Sammlungen von Internet-Quellen, sogenannte Subject Gateways, zu finden, die hervorragend aufbereitete Informationen zu bestimmten Fachbereichen enthalten und über umfangreiche Suchfunktionen verfügen. Dieses Nebeneinander von kommerziellen und nicht-kommerziellen Anbietern, sowie strukturierten und nicht-strukturierten Datensammlungen, macht das Auffinden von Informationsquellen, die für den jeweiligen Informationsbedarf geeignet sind, nicht einfach. Es fehlt an zentralen und übersichtlich gestalteten Einstiegspunkten für eine Recherche, die die ganze Bandbreite des Informationsangebotes einer Institution widerspiegeln. Dies führt häufig dazu, dass viele Quellen mit hochwertiger Information überhaupt nicht aufgefunden werden; oder es wird für eine Suchanfrage die falsche Suchstrategie verwendet und deshalb nicht die gewünschte Information gefunden.
