"Der Beitritt aller bibliothekarischen Einrichtungen innerhalb der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz zum Gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbund (GBV) wird von den Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin nachdrücklich begrüßt. Buchbestände von teilweise herausragender Qualität können im leistungsstarken GBV international recherchierbar gemacht werden und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den einzelnen Häusern der Staatlichen Museen wird im Bibliotheksbereich gestärkt und verbessert. Laut Museumsstatut bilden die Fach- und Handbibliotheken der Museen und Institute ein Bibliothekssystem nach einheitlichen bibliotheksfachlichen Grundsätzen, das den gesamten vorhandenen Literaturbestand umfasst und dessen Koordinierung der Kunstbibliothek obliegt. Als wesentliche Voraussetzung eines solchen Bibliothekssystems wird eine einheitliche Nachweisstruktur für alle Literaturbestände genannt. Dieser einheitliche Gesamtkatalog, der trotz mehrerer Anläufe in der Geschichte der Berliner Museen nie verwirklicht werden konnte, wird im Rahmen des GBV nunmehr Realität. Neben den 400.000 Titeln der Kunstbibliothek zur nachantiken abendländischen Kunstgeschichte, von denen bislang etwa ein Viertel maschinenlesbar erfasst ist, werden in den kommenden Jahren im Rahmen einer Retrokonversion auch die insgesamt etwa 600.000 Bände umfassenden Bestände von 18 Museumsund Institutsbibliotheken sukzessive weltweit recherchierbar. Literatur zur Vor- und Frühgeschichte, zu den großen Reichen Vorderasiens und Ägyptens, zur klassischen Antike und zum weiten Feld der außereuropäischen Kunst und Kultur erweitert den Fokus auf alle Zeiten und Bereiche des menschlichen Kunstschaffens. Im gemeinsamen PICA-Benutzerkatalog präsentieren sich die Bibliotheken der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin künftig als Einheit, die sich in der Breite ihres Sammlungsspektrums mit den großen Kunst- und Museumsbibliotheken der WeIt messen kann. Neben der durch die verbesserte Nachweissituation erleichterten Benutzung der an den Staatlichen Museen vorhandenen Buchbestände wird durch die hoch entwickelten technischen Potentiale des GBV der Datenaustausch mit nationalen und internationalen Partnern ermöglicht. Im Rahmen der von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunstbibliotheken kann die Berliner Kunstbibliothek als Leitbibliothek des Bibliothekssystems der Staatlichen Museen künftig auch im Hinblick auf elektronische Katalogisierungs- und Digitalisierungsvorhaben eine weitaus aktivere Rolle übernehmen als bisher."
