Abstract

A former missionary and graduate student describes how both these previous occupations have motivated his reference service. A missionary's familiarity with certain subject areas provides certain ready response and advisory capabilities. Effective communication with library users can involve adapting to very different ways of conveying messages. Saving face for others and building an inviting public impression can be a key to effective reference communication
