Das Werk enthält eine Auswahl langjähriger Ausbildungsthemen und ist in folgende Abschnitte gegliedert: Grundsätzliches zu Sacherschließung und Klassifikatorischer Sacherschließung / Die Regensburger Verbundklassifikation (RVK) / Weitere Beispiele für Klassifikationen / Bedeutung und Entwicklung Klassifikatorischer Sacherschließung. Die RVK, die in den wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken Deutschlands am weitesten verbreitete Klassifikation, wird unter Berücksichtigung zahlreicher Klassifikationsvergleiche beispielhaft behandelt. Zugleich erläutert der Hinweis auf verbale Sacherschließung die Bedeutung der ohne Sprachbasis nicht durchführbaren Inhaltsanalyse" (BD 1999, H.2)
