Abstract
Immer mehr Musikfans heben ihre Lieblingslieder als große Dateien im Computer auf Die Hersteller von Digitalkameras erhöhen laufend die Auflösung der Bilder. Und Videoaufzeichnungen wird es bald in einer Qualität geben, die weit über der heutiger. DVDs liegt. Eine Folge davon ist bei alldem gleich: Es fallen mehr und mehr Daten an. Forscher suchen deshalb nach Wegen, wie sie auf gleichem Raum mehr Informationen unterbringen können. Erfolg versprechen dabei Geräte, die mit blauen Laserstrahlen arbeiten Es ist die kurze Wellenlänge dieses lichte, auf die die Wissenschaftler setzen. Verglichen mit herkömmlichen roten Diodenlasern lassen sich solche Strahlen besser bündeln. Angenehme und gewünschte Folge: Blaue Laser können Informationen dichter beieinander schreiben als rote. Das Konzept klingt einfach; es in die Praxis umzusetzen, ist aber schwierig. Physiker und Materialforscher versuchen seit vielen Jahren, blaue, Laser herzustellen. Zeit scheiterten sie an Materialproblemen. Die größten Fortschritte erzielten japanische Experten Mitte der neunziger Jahre. Und so ist die Nichia Corporation in Tokushima das einzige Unterneh-men, das blaue Laserdioden produziert.
