Abstract

The notion of activity could be crucial for a large variety of knowledge project and/or complex information systems projects. Roughly speaking, an active system (or better to say, an active intelligent user interface to a system) is not waiting passively for a user's query, but it will push the important and to the user's goals relevant information (or knowledge) whenever it could be necessary or adequate from the system's "point of view". Active systems not only answer questions from the user, but they will also give additional information not directly requested by the user, and might suggest other questions that may be more pertinent to the user's goals. In addition, active systems include a component which broadcasts information that may interest the user, even when the user did not request any information or ask any question. This paper is devoted to explaining of some ideas and methodologies that are recently used in an ongoing project oriented towards creating a large document repository from a restricted yet broad enough scientific and application field. These ideas and methodologies have led to a proposal of an active intelligent user interface to the repository, aiming to help the user actively, establishing his or her profile and in accord with it volunteering or pushing them the relevant knowledge extracted from the repository
