Abstract

Academic libraries' electronic reserves offer faster and more flexible access to greater quantities, ranges, media and sources of information in customized, value-added 'one-stop-shop' packages to meet specific user demand. Whilst enhancing the learning experience, they help students to absorb an integrated acquisition of subject knowledge, IT, bibliographical and search skills to underpin their lifelong learning skills. This integrated approach requires careful management; calling for a higher degree of collaborative working, through multi-skilled teams, than might be found in many British Universities. The Library at the University of the West of England, Bristol, is undertaking a research study to examine the feasibility of close faculty/librarian working partnerships in the management of an integrated package of pedagogic delivery and assessment with information provision for self-directed learning through an electronic reserve. Research has concentrated upon the design and delivery of two business modules. To date, both faculty and librarians have been encouraged by course developments which have resulted from their closer working relationship. Students have responded positively to the integrated package of knowledge tuition and information provision. The marking of an assignment that incorporated the assessment of a multiplicity of skills made possible by this integrated and collaborative approach has been very encouraging. Research will continue next year to more closely identify a range of learning outcomes that can be achieved Studies will be repeated and developed for the two existing modules and extended to a further third year business module
