Abstract

Discusses the major catalogue codes published in the USA and the UK since 1841. Although a number of the authors of theses codes had the catalogue user in mind when creating their codes, not one of the codes was significantly influenced by the findings of empirical investigations of user needs. Suggests that authors of future codes should consider taking into account the research findings of catalogie use studies when creating their codes
