Abstract

The European Community's (EC) interests in information technology (IT) are predominantly aimed at encouraging the development of a European market in IT products and are addressed by its Directorate General 13. Government departments and regulatory and public protection agencies have a wide range of common operational interests in areas such as managing urban information systems, citizen oriented information systems, computer models for land use planning and geographic information systems. Presents a British Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (BURISA) guide for public authorities which addresses the following areas; procurement of IT supplies and services; technical standards; and opportunities that may arise from research projects and research funding. Describes specific EC programmes, projects and public databases
