Abstract

Reports results of a survey of CD-ROM encyclopedias available in the USA in Spring 1997 in an attempt to determine if they are superior or equal to print versions, how they compare with online versions, and whether they are suitable for public library reference use. The survey looked specifically at their suitability for school and public library use with children and and young adults favouring content and accessibility over special features and multimedia enhancements, and examined online or WWW features built into several of the encyclopedias
