Abstract

By 1992 only 2 million of the 7 million titles in the Harvard University library were represented by full records in its automated catalogue and it was therefore proposed to undertake comprehensive retrospective converison. The rationale for the project was based on considerations of access, collection management, storage, preservation and automated circulation. Describes the project design and scope, the selection of vendors, the project management, quality control and vendor performance. The project is due for completion in 1996, taking 5 years to accomplish what some thought to be impossible. The OCLC conversion and authority control have yielded a very high quality product
