Abstract: Das Internet läßt die Welt zusammenrücken. Jeder kann jederzeit mit jedem in Verbindung treten. Diese Möglichkeit wird nicht nur zum Vergnügen genutzt; sie schafft einen neuen Markt. Im Netz werden Produkte angeboten und verkauft, Geschäftspartner gesucht, Verträge geschlossen, Dienstleistungen erbracht. Das facht den Wettbewerb an - und steigert die Wohlfahrt. Es ergeben sich Umwälzungen im wirtschaftlichen Gepräge jedes Landes und Herausforderungen für die Politik, wie Aloys Prinz (Lehrstuhl für Wirtschaftspolitik an der Universität Mainz) und sein Mitarbeiter Hanno Beck schreiben. Der Einzelhandel verliert an Bedeutung, der Strukturwandel beschleunigt sich. Auf dem Arbeitsmarkt verschwinden bekannte Berufsbilder, neue entstehen. Der Arbeitsmarkt wird global, Tarifkartelle zerbrechen, Entsendegesetze werden augehebelt. Die Steuerzahler können perfekte Arbitrage betreiben. Und falls der Zahlungsverkehr mit 'cyber money' zur Realität würde. verlöre die herkömmliche Geldmengensteuerung ihre Wirksamkeit
