Abstract

Examines ways to improve traditional archival descriptive tools in order to provide access to 'hidden groups' such as blacks, women, ethic and cultural minorities, aboriginal, poor, and working people. Traditional provenance based retrieval tools in archives do not provide adequate access to these groups and the only way to retrieve information on them is through formalized subject access systems. Archivists also need to expand their traditional view of subject access to include function, occupation and type of material, in addition to topic and name
