Abstract

Introduces a framework for formal design and construction of music systems. It is demonsrated using the music structures approach, starting with an ontology of music objects, and ending with symbolic and visual representation frameworks and their implementations. A visual formalism based on the music structures approach is introduced. A systematic development of knowledge-representation frameworks for music is essential for obtaining manageable, reliable, user-friendly music processing tools such as composition systems. It is also essential for deepening our understanding of the capabilities and limitations of a computational account for music
