Abstract

The Conspectus has become the international lingua franca for describing and assessing collections. Despite a great deal of criticism levelled at the conspectus, it is the most widely used Collection Development and Cooperative Collection Development (CCD) methodology to date. Explains why it is regarded as an effective CCD tool for a multi-type library consortium or network, and for many large public and academic libraries on an institutional basis. Discusses what the conspectus is; its history; the benefits of using the conspectus; barriers to the uses of the conspectus; reflecting the conspectus in policy statements; the Illinois State Library (ISL): an example of a CD policy based on the conspectus; ISL conspectus analysis; agriculture and related technologies; Illinois collection analysis matrix; the National Library of Medicine; and implementing the conspectus
