Abstract

Examines predictions that information technology will replace intermediaries, not only in the library and information field, but in financial services, travel, printing and publishing and many retail services, as providers of online databases increasingly aim their products at the end user. Argues to the contrary that the growth and complexity of these new services will in fact create more demand for trained information intermediaries; end users quickly grow tired of the often basic and repetitive tasks involved in using online services, and few of them are likely to have the skills or time for more sophisticated searching, which can only be acquired by training, frequent use, and keeping abreast of new relevant developments
