Abstract

Vielleicht vermeiden wir Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare Grundsatzdiskussionen ja gerade deshalb, weil diese uns oft hilflos zurücklassen. Vielleicht gehen wir politischen Diskussionen aus dem Weg, weil wir uns da nicht kompetent fühlen. Wir denken wenig über die Gesellschaft nach. Wir studieren statt dessen die Befunde der Leseforschung und streiten uns nachher, in welchem Marktsegment wir uns engagieren sollen - als ob es ganz selbstverständlich wäre, Bibliotheken als Anbieter von Dienstleistungen zu betrachten. Wir philosophieren über den Leser von gestern und heute, haben aber den Bürger selten im Blick. Mit den folgenden Überlegungen soll versucht werden, einmal von geowhnten Wegen abzuweichen.
