Abstract: Notes the challenges facing public libraries in the provision of library services to users who are becoming increasingly involved in telecommuting and are therefore tending to demand the delivery of information services (including interloans and document delivery) in some kind of telecommuted form. Trends include the increasing bias towards the acquisition of digital materials and information resources at the expense of traditional formats, and the use of facsimile transmission to fax materials from the library to the user's desk at the place of work. Notes the specific example of Ohio State University Library which enables users to call and learn if a particular item is held by the library and have the option of having it paged to them electronically, held for pickup, or mailed to a campus address. Discusses the steps necessary to evaluate the cost benefits of such services
