Abstract

Presents an overview of economic, demographic, social and technological trends in the USA as the 21st century approaches. It is important that national public policies match these trends. Considers in particular the cultural diversity of the US population, the position of youth, the growing proportion of elderly people, and the problem of illiteracy. The concept of information literacy must be integrated into learning programmes so that both people and institutions can take advantage of the information society. Policy on public access to government information must combine the principles of efficiency and equity
