Abstract
Das wachsende Verkehrsaufkommen auf der vielzitierten Datenautobahn verlangt nach Techniken, immer größere Datenraten zu bewältigen. Licht transportiert digitalisierte Informationen in vielerlei Hinsicht besser als ein Elektronenstrom, denn Photonen werden ungleich weniger gedämpft und stören sich gegenseitig nicht. Doch bedarf es aus demselben Grunde elektronischer Bauteile, um die Datenströme zu steuern und zu verteilen. Gegenwärtige Entwicklungen zielen darauf, die optische Übertragung für immer kürzere Distanzen zu nutzen und die Symbiose beider Techniken auch auf der Ebene digitalisierter Schaltungen zu realisieren
