Abstract

Contribution to a special feature on integrating the USMARC bibliographic formats based on papers presented at the MARBI Session of the 1989 ALA Annual Conference. Examines possible problems which integration of USMARC formats might cause for periodicals and audio-visual materials, as a result of changes to the USMARC fixed fields. Concludes that fixed field changes resulting from format integration do not appear too complicated or forbidding. Rather, they remedy some long-standing omissions in functionality in USMARC and allow for equal treatment of nontextual serials and mixed-media items.
