Abstract

Rural communities offer unique perspectives on a variety of issues across computer networks. When distances are vast and time is the essence, electronic connectivity offers even greater potential between remote users than within urban center. Physical distances become negligible as high speed telecommunication enables long-distance education, telecommuting, medical informatics, and the archiving of folk culture. An examination of discussions posted to an electronic bulletin board dedicated to rural issues indicates that participants are linked to the backbone via academic institutions, commercial businesses, and community Freenets. Fiber optic highways offer an alternative to congested toll-roads commutes. Although many arrive with the continuing support of an academic or commerial organization, disenfranchised users must be more creative in their endeavors. Public access terminals, training support, and consistency of menu design would benefit splintered user groups, and help to preserve the integrity of information shared across rural communities
