Abstract

The scanning and document image processing market can be divided by: speed of throughput, size of original document, scanning resolution and whether the scanner is designed to scan black-and-white only, grey scale or colour images. Traditionally grey scale and colour images have been used for photographic libraries and publishing while the office environment bas been content with black and white applications. In the future there made be more hybrid systems. Explains why the requirements of hybrid systems cause problems for today's technology, including compression issues. Sets out options for capturing hybrid documents. Looks at some of the techniques which are being used in photographic libraries to manage large collections of digital colour images and make them available to a large audience. Some of these techniques may be of value in the office environment
