Abstract

Reports on a study of the consistency and integrity of information retrieval using relational views and presents a menas of communication between the database system and a user that interrogates such views. Results indicate that there is a strong connection between information retrieval and view updating since lack of integrity and consistency ate view update time gives rise to anomalies at information retrieval time. Moreover, a set of rules is given that provides the exact method of how a theta join view update is translated to equivalent operations on the underlying base relations without violating the consistency of the database
