Abstract

Discusses the differences between research in the sciences and the humanities, noting that in the latter concepts are semantically imprecise, and in some cases, infinitely permutable. Argues that computerization of subject authority terms has significantly enhanced access to scholarship, and that the MLA International Bibliography has been a paramount influence in effecting these changes. Examines the history of the database and how its adaptations, both semantic and technological, have transformed information retrieval within the disciplines it covers
